The small town is one of the main gateways to recreation in the San Isabel National Forest, which is 1,109,782 acres. Once there, visitors can visit ghost towns or backpack on more than 700 miles of trails. The 148-mile long Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area is also a close distance. The Arkansas River runs along the eastern edge of Buena Vista and offers over 100-miles of whitewater rafting fun.
